There is now a Callahans web site, one we're trying to make reasonably comprehensive and official. Well, comprehensive.
Spider Robinson's own website (new URL).
I'm starting up an alt.callahans favorite posts archive. If there's a post you'd like to see archived, let me know. Forward me a copy, preferably including headers.
The ones I have are indexed chronologically and according to the names of the posters. Contributers so far include GianPaolo, Bill Gawne, Six, Dave, valentine, Tom the Alien Cat, and me.
Mail majordomo@technical.net to subscribe to a #callahans list. The body of your message should read "subscribe callahans" or "subscribe callahans e-mail-address".
instructions for the IRC channel #callahans regarding access to W.
This is kind of out of date now, but it's an important issue so I'm leaving the link up. It doesn't much matter unless you're a regular on #callahans-- if you are, you may want to check it out. [Here's an old statement about #callahans.]
Mike Callahan's bar is the setting of many stories by Spider Robinson. Look for him in your science fiction section. The stories have inspired a virtual bar that exists in Usenet-space as alt.callahans and on IRC undernet as #callahans (and elsewhere including on Delphi, but I haven't had the opportunity to visit that manifestation of my favorite bar). Its patrons often refer to it simply as the Place. Here's a description and map of my particular image of the Place... mileage varies a *lot* on this, though.
Lifehouse, the {sequel to Deathkiller/third in the trilogy including Mindkiller and Time Pressure, all depends how you look at it}, is coming out in about a month. The first couple chapters of it are available at the link above, on Baen's web site.
This paragraph is now old news, but the links still work, so it stays. As a special favor to online Callahanians, Spider has made available the first chapter of Callahan's Legacy. The second chapter is now available, but I wasn't sure that he meant the same offer to go for it, so check TOR's web site for that.
He also had a message posted from him to alt.callahans. Here's a picture of Spider and Jeanne Robinson from the Montreal convention (ConCept) where I met them. You don't need to be a great photographer if you're lucky enough to capture the right moment. Here's the same picture, bigger image file.
I have the honor to be patron saint of #callahans. *grin* They can't get rid of me.
A handy IRC bot known as Orac (from the science fiction series Blake's 7) used to be used on the channel every so often. I haven't seen it online in a long time, though.
Here are a few Callahans pages... pardon the chaos, this is perpetually under construction:
The Crouton Generation is an extended Star Trek spoof valentine participates in. If you visit her page I recommend her Croutonia archives. If the Crouton Generation link doesn't work, check the Admiral's home page.
Andy, aka Tink, is the patron saint of bots, and a source of html advice. *grin* Unfortunately, he seems to be web-page-free at present.
THE OWL SPRINGS PARTNERSHIP: Peter Morwood / Diane Duane: Diane Duane visited the Place a few times.
Archives of alt.callahans posts can be found at ftp eddie.mit.edu and ftp bach.cs.columbia.edu.
USENET Traveller has a review of sorts of alt.callahans. A neat historical note.
