Gian-Paolo rises shakily to his feet, and steps to the bar, taking up
an empty glass. He walks to the chalk line, and looks into his glass, then
holds it meditatively in front of him. "This is what comes of all my efforts,
of all my hopes, of all my dreams, of all my love. Nothing." He throws the
glass deep into the fire, where the flames lick about the emptyness. He steps
to the fireplace, and draws a long cherrywood case from above the mantel. He
opens it, and draws out a red rose, just beginning to bloom - yet cut from the
plant in its youth. He gently lies the rose on the floor, in front of the
fire, damp with his tears.
He turns, and slowly walks out the door, young yet old. The door closes
softly behind him -
A shot rings out from outside.
