[Robertson vs. Reed]

As the Christian Coalition has become more powerful, executive director Ralph Reed has taken over as its public voice. Some say this is because every time founder Pat Robertson opens his mouth, he gets into trouble. Here is a sampler of how Ralph Reed has smoothed out Pat Robertson's message.

On women
"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, antifamily political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians" (anti-ERA fund-raising letter, Iowa, 1992) "We want women to be able to work in the home or work outside the home, according to what they want to do. If they choose to work outside the home, we want them to rise as high and as far as their talents and abilities can carry them, and we want them to be paid the same as men for the same work." (Road to Victory '95, Sept. 9, 1995)

On separation of church and state
"That [separation of church and state] was never in the Constitution, however much the liberals laugh at me for saying it, they know good and well it was never in the Constitution! Such language only appeared in the constitution of the communist Soviet Union" (The 700 Club, Jan. 22, 1995) "We strongly support the principle of the separation of church and state. We oppose government legislation of theological beliefs. We are trying to legislate family-friendly political views..." (Christianity Today, Oct. 3, 1994)

On combating the radical Left
"The strategy against the American radical
Left should be the same as General Douglas
MacArthur employed against the Japanese in the Pacific... bypass their strongholds, then surround them, isolate them, bombard them, then blast the individuals out of their power bunkers with hand-to-hand combat... The battle to regain the soul of America won't be pleasant... but we will win it." ("Pat Robertson's Perspective," April-May 1992)
"I... make the same point by making a sports analogy: 'You don't pass your playbook to the opposing team's coach the night before the big game.' Sports analogies sound playful, military metaphors do not." (fund-raising letter, Nov. 1992)

On Christian leadership
"I think Christians were intended by God to be the leaders." (The 700 Club, Sept. 1, 1995) "The Christian Coalition believes in a nation that is not officially Christian, Jewish or Muslim. A nation where the separation of church and state is complete and inviolable. Where any person may run for elective office without where they attend church or synagogue ever becoming an issue." (Speech before the ADL, April 3, 1995)

On homosexuals
"When lawlessness is abroad in the land, the same thing will happen here that happened in Nazi Germany. Many of the people involved in Adolf Hitler were satanists, many were homosexuals -- the two things seem to go together." (The 700 Club, Jan. 21, 1993) "We don't oppose homosexuals having jobs, running for office, being involved in the civic process, owning and renting property.... It's not a matter of being against or hating homosexuals." (Meet the Press, Nov. 29, 1992)

On endorsing candidates
"We can support candidates if we so desire... Finding quality candidates and getting them elected. I think that's about as American as Mom and apple pie." (L.A. radio program, Nov. 15, 1993) "We don't endorse candidates, we don't endorse pro-choice candidates, and we don't endorse pro-life candidates. The issue is not what will we do [about Republicans' abortion stance], because we're not going to endorse in any case. The question is, is the pro-life position an asset or a liability at the ballot box?" (iGuide interview, Sept. 9, 1995)
