Ed Mechmann, an online subscriber, says most of the criticism of the Catholic Church is both misguided and shortsighted.
"The tragic thing about the comments of most of the self-styled 'disaffected' or 'dissenting'
Catholics is not their disagreement with the Church on matters of faith or morals. The states of
their souls are, after all, between them and God. Rather, the true tragedy is the cramped,
unidimensional vision they have. Their limited worldview is almost pathetic when seen in light of
the depth and breadth of John Paul II's vision of a civilization of love that fosters true solidarity
between people, and that defends human life and dignity against all manner of threats, at all times.
"The challenge to [the Pope's] critics is not to find yet another media outlet for the expression of
their tired, old complaints, but rather to engage the Pontiff in a debate about ideas, about
philosophy, about anthropology. Anyone with an open mind who reads John Paul II's books...
encyclicals and sermons cannot help but be impressed by his powerful and comprehensive
understanding of the very nature of humanity."
