Pope vs. pill

Paul VI's 1968 encyclical, Humanae Vitae, condemned all methods of artificial contraception, disregarding the findings of a commission he had appointed to examine the issue. Although scriptures do not contain any categorical objections to contraception, the Church has been condemning the practice since 572. Teachings like those of Augustine of Hippo -- who equated sexuality with original sin -- have led the Church to declare that sex is appropriate only for married couples who wish to have children. The Church's teachings may be falling on deaf ears. According to a 1993 Gallup poll, 81% of U.S. Catholics say they believe they can use birth control and still be good Catholics.
