1. NYNY had a really long period where they hardly ever lost. Weren't they something like 116-3 over some stretch? In 1990 or 1991, they went to the Ultimate Affair at UMass (huge tournament, like 60 or 80 teams) with two teams, and they met in the finals, although they had a couple close games along the way, but all the top teams in the East were there. Starting in 1992, they would occasionally lose tournaments, so I think we can rule out 92 and 93. I'd say either 90 or 91.

2. Good question. I'd like to see.

NYNY of 90-91 really dominated the competition. In 1990 at Nationals, their smallest margin of victory was 7. This year, DoG won 4 games by 3 or 4 points. In this respect, NYNY was clearly the superior team. The five year streak is pretty impressive, too. On the other hand, DoG's finals victories were bigger blowouts. Strategies are more sophisticated now, too. It's not necessarily that there are more plays now, but both offenses and defenses have more options available to them. On defense, there are all the Clam variations, a few different zones, zone to man transition defenses, etc. Mooney has said that the Rude Boys of 82 played nothing but straight up man to man, and their biggest rivals played nothing but 2-3-2 zone. On offense, the average throwing skill has improved. More players can break the mark successfully, more can throw hammers, more can huck. Perhaps the top players aren't any more or less skilled than they were 6 years ago, but your average player on a top team is probably more skilled now. And the offensive strategies had to evolve to keep up with all the defensive variations.

So, NY was better relative to the teams of its time, but the overall skill level is higher now, so the answer to your question is a firm "I dunno."
